Girls Girls Girls and Why a Black Eye is Cool But a Puffy Face Isn’t
On my way into the city I spotted this Target ad which I LOVE. First of all, the Target ads are clever. But this one is also sick and subversive! This little girl with the black eye is advertising for frozen peas and Target! There’s something very wrong about this, something a patronizing attitude towards women and squeamish people would usually quash. She got a little banged up, but NO BIG WHOOP. She’s psyched. This girl is kicking ass and taking names.
I’m a dad to a girl which can be weird. Sometimes it means that we play fairy princess and discuss unicorns. And as a 6-year old, she is just sorting out what girls and boys are all about. She is very very PRO-GIRL. She yelped with delight and did a triumphant fist bump when she saw the recent cover of NY Magazine. ”Girls!” she yelled! ”Girls!”
She’s full of pro-girl energy and she has no restrictions on her and feels like she can do almost anything. And I want her to feel that way, but it seems like there’s been so much girl-bashing lately.

Ugh! I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by capable, kick-ass ladies. My wife and my daughter are strong women. The amazing Amy Poehler was one of my comedy teachers and founded the UCB Theatre that I’m so lucky to perform and teach at; a place full of kick-ass women.
Don’t take any shit ladies! Get in the mix and - no big whoop - throw some peas on it.
